About Me

THE WHO’S, WHAT’S, WHY’S & WHERE’S?

Well, as you may have guessed, my name is Ryan Perring and I am a professional photographer based in Cornwall. Although I specialise in Sports & Event Photography, that doesn’t mean that’s as far as my skills and work go.

Living in Cornwall, and being surrounded by the vast array of stunning scenery, it would be hard to not document its beauty from time to time. Over the winter however, I plan on investing a lot of time into improving my Landscape and Wildlife Photography.

It all started when…

Having grown up in North Cornwall, I’ve invariably had the love of the outdoors ingrained in me. I’ve always lived an active lifestyle, from playing endless amounts of sport growing up, to now racing and training for ultra marathons on our beautiful coast path and moorland. This love of the outdoors, together with my obsession with taking photos, and developing technology, lead me to my very first camera at the age of 12.

Though my first camera may never have been the greatest; being just a relatively cheap compact camera, it was the first stepping stone in building an ever growing passion for my photography. Over the following years I took more and more photos, and after a while, I tried out and then began using my dads DSLR. The step up in complexity as well as image quality blew me away, despite the camera rapidly falling behind due to the strides in technology. I may have spent most of my time using this DSLR in full auto mode, but my love and interest in the art just kept developing.

The moment that changed everything?

One of the biggest moments that I feel was pivotal in leading me to where I am today, happened in 2012. The summer had just come to a close, and it came around to my Sixth Form induction day, and having to choose which subjects I would study for the next 2 years. I had chosen 3 of my 4 subjects straight off the bat, but not previously thought about my final option. Photography stood out. It was a new course the previous year, I had a love for taking photos and I thought to myself ‘This’ll be a fun, laidback subject’. Ironically, it wasn’t.

The course was intense and based more on analysing my photos than taking them. Sure, I still got to take a lot of photos, and it was an excuse to borrow my dads DSLR in the beginning, as it was “for work”, but my personal enjoyment was and always had been, in actually taking the photos, not writing about them.
However, I thought that if I had to write about camera settings, why not spend my time learning about them and experimenting with my camera. Hopefully in doing this, I’d further my skills and be able to improve my photography in all situations. Within the first month of starting the course, my knowledge had grown exponentially, my analysis improved and my respect for any professionals magnified. It all may have been self taught, like all of my knowledge and skills, but without that course I doubt I’d have continually pushed myself.
